HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. (AP) - California Chrome took the top honor Saturday night at the Eclipse Awards, winning horse of the year.
The winner of the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness last year captured the racing world with a rags-to-riches story, the product of an $8,000 mare being bred to a $2,500 stallion. His bid to become the sport's first Triple Crown winner since 1978 was foiled in the Belmont Stakes, when he tied for fourth.
Breeders' Cup Classic champion Bayern also was up for the award, as was Main Sequence - who went 4 for 4 in 2014, all on turf.
Todd Pletcher won the Eclipse training award for the seventh time, extending his record. Javier Castellano won the jockey Eclipse for the second straight year.
