LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – As America honored Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. more than 300 volunteers used their day off Monday to give back to the community.

Dozens of volunteers from Target and Jefferson County Teachers Association helped spruce up the Beechmont Community Center by painting the multi-purpose room, bathrooms and lobby.

Joanne Paeno, with Target, said, “As far as I know, we've been doing this for the last 10 years, with the local community for the day of service, so it's been a tradition.”

Others took part in the Martin Luther King Day of Service by helping to maintain the beauty of Louisville's park system.

About 75 volunteers with the Olmsted Parks Conservancy project planted several trees and spread mulch.

The Olmsted Parks are on the national historic registry and are one of only four in the world.

Olmsted Parks Activity Leader Sarah Wolff said, "They certainly constitute the fabric of our original city and the neighborhoods around them and they add a lot to the culture and diversity of our city."

Wolff said it takes a lot to maintain the parks and there are plenty of volunteer opportunities year-round.
