OLDHAM COUNTY, KY (WAVE) - We got lots of hellos from people as we stood with our Pass the Cash sign in Oldham County. What we needed was a little help to figure out whom to pass it to. Within minutes we got that too. Little Ms. Dottie let out a big yell to let us know she had the perfect person.
“I thought Charlie, Charlie needs it,” she said.
Charlie and his wife of 37 years were not in the most ideal situation.
“He goes to our church and he's not working. They don't have any money coming in,” Ms. Dottie explained.
Charlie is struggling with heart trouble and his wife was recently diagnosed with ALS.
Ms. Dottie said, “There's not really a thing they can do.”
But there was something we could do, a little something. But without Ms. Dottie we never would have been able to find our way to Charlie in the little town of Lake Jericho.
Once we got there Ms. Dottie passed the cash to Charlie.
Every dollar helps when you're trying to find a way over financial mountains and physical battles.
“Things are rough. She's been off for a year. She can't get her disability started. They keep saying no,” he said. “I don't know what we're going to do. We'll probably lose the house.”
That on top of the most recent emergency.
“My defibrillator shocked me four times. My heart got out of rhythm. It done its job, it kept me alive, it shocked me - put me in the hospital,” he said. “We just put it in the Lord' hands and that's all we can do.”
As the bills and the problems add up, Charlie said he and his wife will, “take it day by day. That's all we can do is take it day by day.”
