LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - In Kentuckiana, we don't drive in this kind of winter weather very often and many drivers forget how to do it. We went to the experts about driving safety in this kind of weather.

John Stuart, from the Kentucky Driving School, shared some tips.

If you are fishtailing, Stuart recommends you take your foot off the gas and start to turn gently into the direction in which the car is swerving - not the opposite - which is the immediate reaction.

"You go into the opposite, you could end up doing a 360," said Stuart.

When it comes to ice, Stuart said just coast.

"Don't accelerate and don't break," said Stuart.

He added hitting the break pedal is the worst thing you can do.

Distance between you and the cars around you is critical.

"You know what they told me a long time ago, always drive like a loner. Never be in a pack with other cars," he said.

It's also best if you follow the track that has always been established on the road.

It is also important to make sure your vehicle is in good shape. Check to make sure your tires are inflated properly and are in good condition. Make sure your battery is good and remember to check coolant levels. Also, make sure you kick off any snow that's trapped in your wheel well.
