LOUISVILLE, Ky.--The NCAA has released its first regional rankings of the year, and the Bellarmine Knights are No. 1 in the Midwest Region.
The regional rankings, voted on by the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Committee, are the basis for awarding seeds in the NCAA Championship. At the DII level, the championship consists of eight regionals with all participants coming from that geographic region, unlike the DI tournament which might send a team from the Southeast to compete in the West Region.
Bellarmine, which has just three more regular season games, sits in front of GLVC rivals Wisconsin Parkside and Indianapolis. The Knights defeated UWP in their only meeting of the season, and dropped a 66-62 decision to UIndy on Jan. 15 on the road. Bellarmine and the Greyhounds will meet one more time in the regular season when UIndy visits Knights Hall on Saturday at 8 p.m.
In all, Bellarmine is 8-2 against teams in the rankings, owning a 6-1 record against ranked teams from their own region and a 2-1 mark from teams outside the Midwest Region.
