Compromise heroin bill passes House

FRANKFORT, KY (WAVE) – After months of debate, the House passed the compromise heroin bill.

Loud applause filled the chamber Tuesday following the 100-0 vote.

The bill includes needle exchanges, Good Samaritan protections and allows pharmacists to prescribe Naloxone, a medication used to counteract the effects of opioids such as heroin. Per the Senate, the bill also includes tougher penalties for dealers, but retains the tiered system of penalties favored by House.

The Senate is currently debating final passage of the bill.
