Several streets closed for bridge construction will open for Thunder traffic

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - In order to accommodate hundreds of thousands of people planning to take in Thunder Over Louisville this weekend, some downtown streets that are normally closed will open to traffic.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and Walsh Construction will stop construction briefly on the Downtown Crossing portion of the Ohio River Bridges Project. Limited work is planned for Friday and there will be no work on the bridge on Saturday.

Crews are working to move construction equipment and open additional streets.

Although crews are suspending construction Saturday, multiple areas along the shoreline in downtown Louisville and southern Indiana remain active work zones and are off-limits.

The following streets within the project area have been cleared and will be open to traffic on Saturday:

  • Adams Street
  • Floyd Street
  • Frankfort Avenue
  • Liberty Street
  • Market Street
  • Main Street
  • Mellwood Avenue
  • River Road
  • Story Avenue
  • Witherspoon Street
Lanes open to traffic:
  • Jackson Street: One lane open from Jefferson Street to Market Street
  • Jefferson Street: Three lanes open from Jackson Street to Floyd Street
  • Preston Street: Two lanes open from Jefferson Street to Liberty Street  

Hancock Street will remain closed between Main Street and Washington Street.

In Jeffersonville:
  • Both Riverside Drive and Market Street will be open Saturday for Thunder Over Louisville.
