LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The Louisville Metro Police Department is welcoming a new K-9, Scout, after a contest to name him drew more than 3000 entries.

In May, the department thanked Kroger for donating $5,000 to help purchase the 2-year-old Belgian Malinois from the Netherlands. Friday, the company announced the results of a contest to name the dog.

Scout will go through 24 weeks of training before hitting the patrol beat.

His name was chosen over other submissions including Thunder, Derby and Ellis, in honor of slain Bardstown officer Jason Ellis.
