LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – The University of Louisville baseball team made it to extra innings, but fell short of making it to the College World Series.
The Cards lost 4-3 to Cal State Fullerton in an 11-inning third and decisive game Monday in the Super Regional at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Before the Cards took the field, fans lined up and cheered before the winner-take-all game.
Fan Ed Bishop said, "It's just unbelievable I don't know how I describe that."
How about nervous, anxious and excited - after all the Cards had the chance to make it a College World Series triple play if they could get there again this year.
"They just keep getting better and better and it's just a lot of fun. We just feel really lucky to be a Louisville Cardinal fan," said Catherine Bishop.
"We got a lot of good pitchers," said Ed Bishop.
No doubt about that and the Cards had one on the mound - New Albany's own Josh Rogers who had a lot riding on his shoulders.
"I must admit I'm pretty nervous," his father, Bobby Rogers said. "It's a big game, it's the biggest game. I was thinking I told him this morning not to put anymore added pressure on himself, but it's the biggest game he ever pitched."
After Cal State Fullerton scored a homer off Rogers in the first inning he was on the money from there on, striking out the Titans one by one. His mom, Eldora Rogers, could only concentrate on the positive - getting to the College World Series again.
"That is a once in a lifetime chance for sure, something that we hope that we make it and we get there and, uh, win all the way through for the National Championship and I think we've got a shot at it," she said.
A home run shot from Will Smith in the 4th tied it up, then the Cards were up 2-1 in the bottom of the 6th. A wild pitch puts the Cards up 3-1 in the 7th, but the Titans tied it up in the 8th. With neither team scoring in the 9th the game went into extra innings with the Cards falling to the Titans 4-3 in the bottom of the 11th.
The two teams competed in three Super Regional games with UofL falling to Cal State Fullerton 3-2 on Saturday, June 6 and then winning 9-3 on Sunday, June 7.
