LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Keion Wakefield was waiting for a scholarship offer from the University of Louisville and the wait is over.
"Kind of, I was waiting for it, but at the same time I wasn't expecting it," Wakefield said. "I was just praying and hoping that it would happen, but when it actually happened it was a shock."
The Male High School senior wide receiver already had offers from Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Purdue, and Cincinnati, but the offer from Cards changed the game.
"Not everybody who plays football can say that they had an offer from their hometown school, and plus UofL, top of the conference in the ACC, and that's a power five conference," Wakefield added.
He has already made unofficial visits to Clemson, Oregon, Alabama, Tennessee, UofL, UK, Florida, Cincinnati, Illinois and Purdue, and plans to take his five official visits this fall.
However, he also plans to commit before the the Bulldogs high school season kicks off on August 21, against Floyd Central.
"Here in the next month I'm going to make a decision."
Bobby Petrino's offensive resume and "Feed the Studs" philosophy impresses Keion.
"Coming back from a foot injury, DeVante Parker, he only played seven games and had over 1,000 receiving yards. That shows that he puts the ball in his playmakers hands," Keion said.
Wakefield runs a 4.48 40, and had 40 receptions for 634 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2014.
He says don't count out Kentucky, the school that first offered a scholarship, back in 2013.
"They're up there with UofL and all the other schools. They are on the uprise too, and they have a big power five conference in the SEC."
