LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Adidas unveiled a new uniform for the University of Louisville football team on Thursday featuring a "photo-real" take on the signature cardinal that is decidedly angry.
The "#UNCAGED" Cardinal - featured on one side of the helmet and the cleats - is officially "fierce, attacking and always on the offensive," according to a release from the university. But some social media commenters - including our own Troubleshooter Eric Flack - wondered if it wasn't more reminiscent of the mega-popular smartphone game Angry Birds.
While the new bird is sure to be the topic of most of the chatter, the new uniforms have plenty more to talk about. The other side of the helmet features the school's signature "L" in chrome and red, which also appears on one side of the pants. The shoulders of the jersey feature chrome and red wings, "symbolizing the Uncaged Cardinal in flight." The undershirts featured in the announcement have a red "L" emblazoned over an angry gray and white cardinal, with his wings extending onto the players' biceps.
Adidas has a history of releasing unusual jerseys that can be bold when they work, and just plain ugly when they don't. Opinions tend to differ, though, depending on who you root for.
The Uncaged uniforms will make their on-field debuts on Sept. 5 for the season opener versus Auburn.
