FRANKLIN COUNTY, KY (WAVE) - A human skull found in a sinkhole Tuesday was confirmed to be of Native American origin, according to officials in Franklin County.

A maintenance worker was mowing at a farm in the 2900 block of Jones Lane when he stopped to show his granddaughter a sinkhole, but when the two looked inside they could hardly believe their eyes.

Franklin County Sheriff Pat Melton confirmed the two found a human skull.

The sinkhole had reportedly been there for a while, but recently grew deeper and is about 15 feet deep.

An excavator was brought in to dig up the area. Officials estimated the skull was 1,000 to 3,000 years old.
