LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - It is unfortunate that Rowan County, Kentucky clerk Kim Davis was ordered jailed by a federal judge for not doing her job. It didn't need to come to this outcome.
It did because she stopped issuing marriage licenses to anyone and refused to let other clerks in her office issue them – making folks go to another county to get a license.
She chose to put herself in this situation. She could have honored her beliefs and still enabled the work of the office be done.
We don't have to agree with all of our laws, but we do have to obey them. We don't have to like doing parts of our job, but we still must make sure they get done.
Her request that her name and title be removed from all marriage licenses might be an acceptable compromise and should be considered. It would get her out of jail and enable the work of the office to be accomplished.
