E-town group among 3,000 stranded after fire on cruise ship

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Passengers on a Carnival cruise ship can thank an engine fire for an extended tropical vacation.

More than 3,000 travelers are stranded in St. Thomas following the fire on the Carnival Liberty.

A passenger from Chicago said she heard a strange noise coming from the ship, and once the boat docked, she and her friends saw smoke.

"I'm thankful that we were not out at sea when this happened," said Wendy Simpson-Campbell, who's traveling with a group from Elizabethtown. "I could have been in a life boat out in the middle of the ocean."

Simpson-Campbell later posted on Facebook that Carnival is making flight arrangements for its passengers, and that it could take several days before everyone is off the island.

"In the mean time we are living it up and partying on," she wrote, adding that the Carnival staff members have been very accommodating.
