KCH to receive $250,000 grant from Hyundai cancer program

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The fight against childhood cancer in WAVE Country just got a little stronger.

Automaker Hyundai will present a $250,000 check to Kosair Children's Hospital next week.

Hyundai's Hope On Wheels program is spending more than $10 million in September, which is also National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. By the end of the month, the Hope On Wheels program will have raised more than $100 million in funding since its inception in 1998.

A Hope On Wheels Handprint ceremony is scheduled for Sept. 24 at Kosair Children's Hospital on Chestnut Street in downtown Louisville.

Kenneth Lucas, M.D., chief of pediatric hematology/oncology at Kosair Children's Hospital, and chief of the division of pediatric hematology/oncology and stem cell transplantation at the University of Louisville, will lead the research.

As a newly named Hyundai Scholar, Dr. Lucas will use the funds to conduct immunotherapy research on certain pediatric tumors.
