LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Both of the LMDC inmates who escaped from the Community Correctional Center on Monday have been caught.

Just before 3 a.m. on Tuesday, Louisville Metro Department of Corrections confirmed that Christopher Cornelius was back in custody. He was being evaluated for minor injuries.

Matthew Johnson was also taken into custody early Tuesday morning in Jeffersontown. Police say he had broken ankles.

The two inmates allegedly tied together bed sheets and used them as a rope to escape from the roof of the Community Correctional Center, according to Louisville Metro Department of Corrections officials.

Matthew Johnson, 29, and Christopher Cornelius, 37, were assigned to interior work duty when they escaped from the center, which is a part of LMDC located at 316 East Chestnut Street, shortly after 9 p.m. Monday.

Billie Jo and Misti Johnson are mother and sister to Johnson.

"I would like to know what the heck he was thinking," Misti Johnson said.
Both men were assigned to interior work duty and were facing heroin charges.
Johnson's family says it's been a battle.

"I wouldn’t wish this on anybody," Billie Jo Johnson said. "We’ve been going through it for a long time and trying to get him help and there’s not a whole lot of help out there."

What Johnson's family didn't know at the time of the interview is where he was found. Jeffersontown Police say they assisted corrections officers in a traffic stop near the corner of Old Six Mile and Patti Lane. Police say Johnson was hiding under a blanket in the car and the driver was his other sister, Sarah Johnson, 26.

"I do sleep better at night when he is incarcerated, than I do when he’s out," Billie Jo Johnson said. "We have buried several of his friends, one day I’ll get that phone call."

According to LMDC records, Cornelius was booked in on July 11 on multiple charges , 10 of which were felony charges including criminal trespass, disorderly conduct, escape, tampering with prisoner monitoring device, theft by unlawful taking, failure to illuminate headlamps, possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of meth precursor and probation violation.

Johnson was booked in on July 31. He was being held on charges of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance and flagrant non support.

Sarah Johnson was arrested and booked for charges of escape 2nd degree, drug paraphernalia, and hindering prosecution.
