LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - University of Louisville President Dr. James Ramsey issued a personal apology on Friday for dressing in a stereotypical Mexican costume during a staff luncheon earlier in the week.
Ramsey was among 18 UofL staff members who appeared in a photo published in Thursday's edition of The Courier-Journal who were wearing sombreros, mustaches and other items many people on campus and in the larger community found offensive.
Ramsey's statement reads as follows:
"I want to personally apologize for the recent incident and any pain that it may have caused our students, faculty, staff and the community. We did not intend to cause harm or to be insensitive. I hope this doesn't detract from the hard work we – the entire UofL community - have done and continue to do in building an inclusive, supportive, welcoming campus for all our university family. I pledge to work to ensure that we move forward as one university."
Ramsey's Chief of Staff Kathleen Smith issued a similar apology Thursday afternoon. Read her statement by clicking on this link.
