LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - It'll be a "Derby City" team matchup on Nov. 1 as the Bellarmine University men's basketball team travels down the road to the KFC Yum! Center to open up the season against University of Louisville. The game will be aired live on WAVE 3 News with tip set for 1:35 p.m.
The Louisville-Bellarmine matchup will be the sixth time the two Louisville teams have met in exhibition play. Cardinals have won all five previous matchups.
In the teams' last meeting, Louisville posted a 82-57 exhibition victory with Montrezl Harrell leading the Cards with 17 points and nine rebounds.
After a 31-4 record last season and reaching the NCAA Division II Final Four for the third time in the last five years, Bellarmine is ranked fifth in the Division II Bulletin preseason top 25 poll and sixth by The Sporting News. The Knights return three starters this season including senior forward George Suggs, junior forward Josh Derksen and junior guard Rusty Troutman.
Louisville returns just 17 percent of its scoring from last season, the lowest for a UofL team in 43 years, with only two players -- Mangok Mathiang and David Levitch -- returning who have played with the team for more than a year.
Following their season opener against Louisville, the Division II Knights will take on the Cincinnati Bearcats on Nov. 7 and Indiana Hoosiers on Nov. 9. Louisville will play against Kentucky Wesleyan on Nov. 9 and Samford on Nov. 13.
WAVE 3 News Sports Director Kent Taylor will provide play-by-play and Drew Deener of 93.9 The Ville will add color commentary. This will be the second year for WAVE 3 News to produce and air the matchup.
