LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Workers are putting the finishing touches on the new downtown bridge.

The bridge is expected to open to two-way traffic in December. The final steel beam for the deck of the new bridge was set in October, along with the final deck panels. But Jeremiah Littleton with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said there is still work to be done.

"The bulk of the work right now is finish work," said Littleton. "As you can see we've got the steel closed up, that's what the Christmas tree is all about. We got the last cables installed, we're doing the final geometry controls, we're installing the finger joint - the big metal fingers that go on the ends, we're installing those."

Officials are hoping we can all enjoy the new bridge by Christmas.

The entire project, which includes a rehabilitation of the Kennedy Bridge, is slated to be complete in December of 2016.
