LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A former University of Louisville basketball star is preparing for emergency brain surgery.

Evansville native, Kyle Kuric, 26, currently plays American Professional Basketball in Spain. His team, Herbalife Gran Canaria, released information about Kuric's recent test results which revealed a condition known as meningiomas, a series of tumors surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Meningiomas are often benign but a small percentage is malignant, according to the American Brain Tumor Association.

A migraine led Kuric to the doctor for examination, according to a statement released by Herbalife Gran Canaria. Teknon Medical Center of Barcelona found the brain tumor. In the coming days, he is scheduled to undergo emergency surgery to remove, according to his current team.

Kuric played basketball at UofL from 2009 to 2014. Coach Rick Pitino released a statement saying, “We’ve had some pretty big disappointments in the past few months, but nothing compares to this. Our prayers and good wishes go out for a healthy and speedy recovery for Kyle. He’s one of the finest young men that I have had the privilege to coach and our Louisville family’s prayers are with him.”

"He led us on one of the most improbable runs to the Final Four that our fans will never forget," Senior Assoc. Athletic Director Kenny Klein said.

Nicknamed "Kyle's Korner," because of his shooting from the corner of the court, Kuric expanded his reach beyond the rim.

His most widely known charity is Kyle's Korner for Kids, an organization founded by Kuric that gathers necessities of local nonprofit groups to brighten the lives of children.

"He tries to stay active in the community because he lives here in the off season," Klein said.

In August, Kuric and his wife, Taraneh Momeni Kuric, welcomed the birth of twins. His father is a neurosurgeon.
