LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Video of a Thanksgiving night fight at The Mall St. Matthews has gone viral.
The video of two men fighting near the Mall's food court was posted on social media late Thursday night and was picked up by several national media outlets Friday and related to Black Friday, what's generally regarded as the busiest shopping day of the year.
Thursday night's incident was broken up quickly and was not Black Friday-related, according to a Mall spokesperson.
"The incident that occurred on Thanksgiving night was an isolated incident that was immediately handled by security," Dee Snyder, the marketing manager for the Mall, said in a press release. "The safety and well-being of our shoppers, retailers and employees are always our top priorities. The mall has a customized public safety program that entails different measures for various scenarios.
"We do not discuss our public safety measures because doing so would compromise our efforts. We are expecting a busy and successful holiday shopping season and I want to emphasize safety and security are our priorities every day."
The St. Matthews Police Department said in a press release that it did respond to the incident, but that it was over by the time officers arrived on scene.
"Our response time was approximately one minute," Dennis McDonald, of the SMPD, said. "Mall Security did an outstanding job of breaking up the fight and restoring order. All was dispersed upon our arrival. We don't know if it was staged or not. Probably not. No one involved in the incident reported being assaulted. No danger to property was reported."
SMPD urges anyone who was assaulted in the fight, or anyone who knows that the fight was staged, to contact it at 893-9000.
"It was otherwise, quiet and orderly," McDonald said. "It's a shame that this incident would mar what was a great atmosphere for Mall shoppers."
