LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Studies say almost half of Americans tend to make New Year's resolutions, with the majority of those resolutions focused on losing weight and staying fit and healthy.
With only 8% of those people being successful, Roxanne Kimbell, group exercise instructor for the YMCA of Southern Indiana, offered these tips on WAVE 3 News Weekend Sunrise to succeed in reaching fitness goals in the new year:
1. Make a plan: Kimbell says the biggest mistake is doing too much too soon, like going to the gym everyday. She recommends starting with light physical activities like 10-minute walks around the neighborhood, instead.
2. Join a fitness group: Group fitness makes keeping health goals easy because everyone is there for a common goal, Kimbell says.
3. Be SMART: Kimbell says making specific goals that are easy to measure, action-oriented, realistic with a time frame are key in health-related resolutions.
