Former Trinity teacher sentenced to 42 years on child porn charges

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A former teacher and coach at Trinity High School was sentenced to 42 years in prison on Wednesday for producing child pornography involving 16 different boys.

Patrick Newman, 33, pleaded guilty in August 2015 to 16 counts of producing child pornography, one count of online enticement of a minor, one count of transporting child pornography and one count of possessing child pornography.

His victims ranged in age from 12 to 17. Newman met with three of them - all from the Louisville area - in person, and communicated with the others online. The other victims were from Texas, Ohio, Indiana, Colorado, North Carolina, New York, Utah, Oregon and the United Kingdom.

"These were unspeakable crimes, victimizing vulnerable and impressionable minors," U.S. Attorney John E. Kuhn said in a press release. "Protecting our children will always be the highest priority of this office, and we will continue to prosecute those who exploit children to the fullest extent of the law."

Police were tipped off by the social media website Twitter, which alerted authorities that a boy had uploaded child pornography to Vine, a short form video service owned by Twitter. Authorities determined that Newman had been in contact with boy and obtained the pornography from him.

Newman admitted a sexual interest in teenage boys and told authorities had been communicating with various teens over the span of two years.

Police determined that Newman solicited and received pornographic images from 16 boys under the age of 18. Investigators also found more than 80 other images of child pornography in one of Newman's online data storage accounts.
