Pass the Cash - January 13, 2016: George

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Much like our hard working U.S. postal service, neither snow, nor rain, nor dark of night can keep us from passing the cash each week. This week our recipient had no idea what we were doing but he did know what he was going to do with the dough.

It was cold, very cold, but the thought of helping someone in need as we Pass the Cash kept our hearts warm at least. It started with someone stopping to Pass the Cash to us.

Word that we were out with our Pass the Cash sign was also being passed around in the Clifton. Melissa heard we were in her neighborhood and she knew a neighbor that could use the help.

“There's some people on my street. They have grandchildren living in their house,” she said.

Now on disability, George was a grandfather in the role of father once again.

“I just know they could really use it right now,” Melissa said.

Our cash came from viewers, one who had saved her extra change all through 2015. It added up to a life changing amount for someone in need. We had a total of $518, that will hopefully make a difference, or at least a dent, in a few of the families bills.

“He is going to flip. He is going to flip,” Melissa said.

Holding our cash to pass we knocked. George answered holding one of his grandbabies.

“They had a sign saying Pass the Cash. I know that you all could use it. She comes up with money.  I'm not sure how and she passes it to someone that needs it,” Melissa said.

George was not only surprised but confused. He had no idea what we were talking about. He didn't understand what in the world we were doing, but he appreciated it and even more important he needed it.

“I've got four grandbabies that live with me,” he said. “You don't know how much this is going to help me. I got a water bill I have to pay. This will help a lot.”

Unable to work, George does what he can when he can to make what he can.

“I went scrapping, made 20 something bucks and I spent 12 of that in my gas,” he said.

He did not know what to say, but he did know exactly what to pay - that outstanding water bill.

“My goodness I don't know what to say,” George said. “Thank you so much. Thank you so much.”
