LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The Cards redeemed themselves Monday night by knocking off #1 ACC ranked North Carolina at the KFC Yum! Center.
Damion Lee, a fifth year senior, led the victory by expanding a two point lead with back-to-back triples. He racked up 24 points and played every second of the game.
Chinanu Onuaku battled foul trouble but came up huge in the second half. He pulled a three-point play to put the Cards up by 8 at 63-55.
All three of Trey Lewis' field goals came in the final few minutes, making it 67-61. He also hit two free throws with 26 seconds left to seal a 71-65 win.
"We were brilliant with transition defense," Coach Rick Pitino said. "We did a fabulous job of making sure that we got in the paint. This was a record for us, we had 60 paint touches in that game, that's a lot. We want 45, but we got 60, and we played obviously superb defense as well."
The Cards are now 18-4 for the season; 7-2 in the ACC. Their next game is against Boston College at the KFC Yum! Center on Saturday.
