Rare, 19th-century political items stolen from Highlands home

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Detectives are on the hunt after a thief broke into a home in the Highlands and stole rare political campaign items from the 19th century.

Investigators had to turn to history books to learn more about the items, which were stolen on December 26.

Detectives said the items included about 1,200 campaign coins for U.S. presidential candidates including Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Jackson. The coin collection alone is valued at $1 million dollars, police said.

So far detectives have recovered only a few of the coins. Some of them are being sold in other states including Pennsylvania. 

Police have surveillance of the alleged burglar. They are sill searching for him and trying to determine whether he was working alone. 

Jewelry and $7,000 cash was also stolen during the burglary at a home in the Woodford Place neighborhood in the Highlands, according to the police report.
