LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – With spring just around the corner, there will be more to enjoy at the Louisville Zoo and more time to enjoy it.

Starting March 12, the Zoo will now close at 5 p.m. with guest exiting by 6 p.m. Along with the expanded park hours, attractions including the train, tram and carousel will be reopening. The Great Clips Adventure Ropes Course will also reopen weather-permitting.

Guest will also have the opportunity to ride a camel starting March 19. Additional tickets are needed for the camel rides. Tickets for Zoo members will cost $5 and non-member tickets will cost $6. Camel ride tickets can be purchased and various designated locations throughout the park.

In addition to what’s on the list for this spring, a baby camel will be making its debut. Lulu, who is a month-and-a-half old, will show her face to park guest March 19. The calf will not be part of the camel ride attraction.

Other attractions will be reopening later this spring. The Papa John’s Splash Park is set to open on Memorial Day. The reopening of Lorikeet Landing is dependent on warmer weather. It will reopen when temperatures are consistently at or above 50 degrees.

The Zoo is also offering a free health program this season. The Norton Healthcare Get Healthy Walking Club kicked off March 1. The club walks the Zoo Walkers loop, a path combining hills and flat surfaces that lead walkers trough animal exhibits. The walking path is “a challenging twist on the traditional ‘weekend stroll.’”

Directional signs are placed along the path to guide walkers. The signs also provide health tips. This program is free. To join, call Norton Healthcare at 502-629-1234.

The Louisville Zoo also refurbished one of its attractions over the winter. Most pieces of the carousel were stripped completely and restored while other parts of it received fresh coats of paint to give the ride a new look.
