CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - Louisville coach Bobby Petrino says offensive coordinator Garrick McGee is leaving to take a job on Lovie Smith's staff at Illinois.
Petrino said in a statement Wednesday that McGee "has a great football mind." McGee will be Smith's first hire since being named Illini coach Monday, though his exact role was not announced.
Petrino said he understood McGee's decision based in part on McGee's long relationship with Smith. As an assistant at Arizona State, Smith recruited McGee as a player.
McGee spent two seasons at Louisville. The Cardinals were ranked eighth in the 14-team ACC last year in scoring at 28.7 points per game and fifth in total offense at 416.1 yards per game.
