LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - We were back on the road again in southwest Louisville Passing the Cash and holding on to all that it means to be a community that cares.

This week we learned the lesson of what it means to not only be a good neighbor, but also a good friend.

It had been some time since we had grabbed our Pass the Cash sign to stand on the side of the road. It seemed like a perfect day and a perfect way to spend some time outside.

We met Willie Alexander at the windy corner of Upper Hunters Trace and Dixie Highway. He was a man of few words but he told us about Ms. Jean.

“Been knowing her for years. She lives in the neighborhood. She has cancer. Struggling to pay her bills sometimes,” Willie said.

She may struggle with her bills but Willie tries to make sure she doesn't struggle with anything around the house. At 87 years old Ms. Jean has been fighting cancer for seven years. He couldn’t wait to Pass the Cash.

With the $300 from WAVE 3 News, combined with the cash collected on the side of the road and an extra $305 from the Louisville Alumni Chapter of Sigma Chi, we had a total of $630 for Ms. Jean.

When we got to Ms. Jean’s home we knocked – and we waited. We tried to call, then finally she came to the door.

Willie was excited and nervous. While he was Passing the Cash Ms. Jean was getting calls from all over the neighborhood..

“If you hang up and let me find out what's going on I'll be able to tell you later,” she said to the person on the other end.
She watches Pass the Cash but she just didn't understand how we found out about her.

“Nobody really knows what all I've been through so thanks, thanks, thanks,” Ms. Jean said.
