LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Four people, including at least one child, have died after a fire was intentionally set in southeastern Jefferson County.

The arson was reported in the 13000 block of Saratoga Springs Place around 2:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon, according to Louisville Metro Police Department spokesman Dwight Mitchell.

"Four people are deceased," Mitchell said. "There are some adults, and unfortunately some children."

Jeffersontown Fire Chief Sean Dreisbach said 35 firefighters from around the area responded, putting out the fire in less than 15 minutes. He said they quickly realized it was an arson.

"When we have multiple fires on multiple floors, we can pretty much figure it's going to be an arson investigation," Dreisbach said.

Neighbors said they rushed to the home when they saw smoke and weren't sure if the family was still inside.

"We were just sick," Melissa Halfhill, who lives down the street from the home said. "We couldn't believe something like that would happen in our neighborhood. Typically calls out here are just minor things but not a fire or a fire with people in it on our street. You just don't expect that to happen."

Halfhill said she didn't know the family well, saying they had lived at the home for about a year.

"A lot of people that live near them that thought a lot of them and everybody's just in shock and very sad," Halfhill said.

So far, neither police nor the fire department could confirm how the victims died.
