Pass the Cash - April 6, 2016: Shalimar

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - It's early spring and already we've had high winds, rains and storms, but some folks dark clouds and showers have nothing to do with the weather.

This week we headed to west Louisville for a little help passing the cash and a little help spreading as much good news as we could.

On the corner of Cane Run Road and Algonquin Parkway we get more cash to pass and we get help passing the cash we had.

Yvonne Austin shared Shalimar's story and why she was a perfect choice.

“She moved to the city and didn't have any relatives. Found out she was expecting,” Yvonne said.

Shalimar had no home, no job and no family, but she did have lots of sisters willing to do what they could.

Yvonne said, “Delta Sigma Theta sorority I'm in sent out a mass text and asked if there was anyone in the area that could assist her.”

Her sorority sisters came bearing gifts with just about everything a baby might need.

“She's had the baby. She lived in a Woman's Shelter. She now has a place of her own but she's still looking for employment,” she said.

Yvonne has only met Shalimar twice, but with a quick call we were able to find her. It was time to Pass the Cash.

We had $300 from WAVE 3 News and an extra $5 from friends who stopped to say hello. Yvonne added an extra $20 just before we knocked on the door.

New to WAVE Country, Shalimar was also new to Pass the Cash and had no idea what was about to happen.

“She was standing on the corner saying Pass the Cash so I thought about you and your welcome to Louisville,” Yvonne said.

While 10-week-old Baby Landon fast asleep and counting sheep, Yvonne was counting bills to Pass the Cash to a new single Mom doing her best for her family.

“I was not expecting this what so ever so I'm very thankful. I have no idea what to say,” Shalimar said.

She had no idea what to say until I ask what kind of job she is looking for.

“I went to Spellman College. I am a proud graduate of the class 2013. I have a Bachelor of Arts in political Science and I'm interested in Educational Policy,” Shalimar said.

We passed the cash but Shalimar did not want to pass up a chance to let WAVE Country know she is ready to work and make Louisville her home.

“Thank you, thank you. I appreciate it,” she said. “I totally was not expecting this. God is absolutely amazing. Thank you.”
