LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - It's always darkest before the dawn - so the saying goes. But how do you hold on to any sense of sanity or peace while waiting for just the smallest ray of hope to shine?

As we Pass the Cash this week, we find it's amazing what a little love and care can do to help someone navigate a very rough road.

Traci Fox had a lot to say on the Pass the Cash nomination form she filled out on wave3.com about her friend Mark.

“My friend Mark has a lot of strikes against him all at once,” she said.

Mark was born with a vision impairment.

“He has low vision so he doesn't drive,” Traci said. “A couple of weeks ago he had chest pains, turns out he had to have open heart surgery right away.”

Mark has mitral valve prolapse. He was aware of the problem, but the progression of the condition hit him hard and fast.

“So they replaced the valve. Then his roommate moved out so he could no longer afford the place he was living. He's not working because he's recovering from open heart surgery,” Traci said.

Traci works at Goldsmith Elementary School.

“When I was telling people they all wanted to help so I collected another $50,” Traci said.

WAVE 3 News ready with $300. More money from an anonymous donor in E-town and Cox's Creek came to a total of $565. We didn’t have to travel far for Traci to Pass the Cash to Mark.

“Oh my God,” Mark said. “I woke up feeling so bad today. Thank you so much.”

How quickly things in life can change. Even good news can take your breath away.

“It's so much help. I can't believe it,” he said.

Lots of hands make a heavy load lighter - hopefully Mark’s load is now a little easier to carry.
