LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The Fresh Stop Markets got off to a jammin' start this year.

Local nonprofit New Roots kicked off its 2016 Fresh Stop Markets season with the Fifth Annual Strawberry Jamm Festival at Redeemer Lutheran Church on Thursday.

Free to the public, the festival included performances by Dance Envy as well as the AMPED Kids, spoken word by B-Shatter, along with face painting, tai chi and storytelling.

The festival also featured strawberry-themed foods like chocolate-covered strawberries, strawberry salsa and gluten-free strawberry shortcake. All the strawberries were grown locally by VanMeter farms.

"The thing I like most about the Strawberry Festival is that it brings the community together. Each year New Roots and the Fresh Stop Markets get better and better, attracting more leaders and shareholders and creating enormous social capital. Not to mention we get to eat the best berries around," Nathaniel Spencer, a Fresh Stop Market leader, said in a press release.

New Roots works to provide communities with limited access to fresh food, food from farms around the area. They do this by holding bi-weekly Fresh Stop Markets at nearby churches and community centers. In order to make the food affordable, families are allowed to combine their money and SNAP benefits and pre-order their food.
