LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - University of Louisville head coach Dan McDonnell has his hands full with starters, but only one gets the job.
When it comes down to it, McDonnell and pitching coach Ted Williams decided senior Kyle Funkhouser is going to get his 15th start of the season against Western Michigan in the NCAA Tournament opener on Friday.
"With Coach Williams being the loudest vote of them all and Kyle Funkhouser not getting to start in the conference tournament, we decided that Kyle is going to get the ball on Friday," McDonnell said.
The Cardinals have three starters with 11 plus wins this season and the first round pick in the 2015 MLB Draft, Funkhouser is 8-3 on the season and has a 4.11 ERA.
"I think this is my third year in a row starting the opening game of the regional and like I said, it's just an honor. We have a great, like I said, we always have a great staff and great guys and this year more than ever we have three guys with 11 plus wins," Funkhouser said.
The opener will be on Friday at 6 p.m. at Jim Patterson Stadium and the Louisville Region No. 1 Cards will take on the No. 4 Broncos.
