LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Enough is enough.
The year isn't even half over and Louisville has 47 homicides, triple the number from the first five months two years ago and double the number last year. Last year's total was 86, a 28-year high and nearly 50 percent increase from the prior year.
Shootings are also on a record pace, up more than 40 percent from last year – and last year was up more than 40 percent from the year before.
Robberies and aggravated assaults are also up.
There are lots of potential reasons why – from gangs, to the economy, to broken homes.
We don't want this trend to continue, and define us.
You can't truly be a compassionate city if crime increases are the new norm.
We can settle differences without guns.
We need to take back our neighborhoods.
