LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) "With the fifth selection in the 2016 MLB Draft, the Milwaukee Brewers select Corey Ray. A center fielder from the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky". With those words from Major League Baseball commissioner, Rob Manfred, U of L outfielder Corey Ray became the highest drafted player in U of L baseball history. Ray is the highest drafted position player since Bryce Harper in 2010.
The Cards lead off hitter is excited about the Draft, but feels he has much more to accomplish. "It's good. It's great. It shows the hard work that I've put in, but it's not as important to me because I don't think that this will be the highlight of my career, said Ray. While Ray made UofL history, he's not the only the Card making history on draft night. Two more Cards heard their name called in the first round. Closer, Zack Burdi went 26th to the White Sox, and Kentucky Country Day product, catcher Will Smith was the 32nd pick in the first round by the Dodgers.
U of L had one first round draft pick in school history, but on Thursday night, they had three.
