Worrell leads UofL, local contingents at Olympic Trials

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Thirty-four current and future members of the University of Louisville swimming and diving teams will compete in the U.S. Olympics Trials, which begin Sunday in Omaha, Neb.

The most well-known, and the one with the best chance of making the United States team, is Kelsi Worrell. The 21-year-old senior is a two-time NCAA champion (in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly events)and an American record-holder (in the 100-yard fly).

The Mt. Holly, N.J. native is seeded between second and 12th in four events. 

Worrell is the No. 2 seed (with her time of 57.24 seconds)in the 100-meter butterfly, behind former Olympic gold medalist Dana Vollmer, 28. The preliminaries and semifinals for that event will take place Sunday. The final is slated for Monday. 

Worrell is also the sixth seed in the 200 butterfly, which begins Wednesday and finishes Thursday, in addition to being the 10th seed in the 50 freestyle and the 12th seed in the 100 free.

UofL junior Andrea Cottrell is also highly-seeded in two events: 11th in the 100 breaststroke and 13th in the 200 breast. 

Meanwhile the UofL men's representatives will be led by freshman Zach Harting, who is the 17th seed in the 200 butterfly. 

Many others will local ties will be competing at the trials, including seven current, or former, Sacred Heart Academy swimmers. Leading those is SHA senior-to-be Brooke Forde, who is seeded 15th in the 400 individual medley and 19th in the 200 IM.
