LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Should term limits be placed on members of Congress and statehouse representatives like we do presidents and governors?
Should political parties be eliminated and everyone be required to run as an independent and vote as an independent?
Election season sharpens our focus on what is good, bad, and indifferent about how we elect people and what happens after they get elected.
Most of the time it seems the governing part of the job description gets ignored in favor of the electoral focus. Every action by many elected officials is filtered with a lens of what will lead to re-election. Term limits would encourage more actual governing.
And voters tend to vote along party lines rather than on the candidate themselves. In doing so they sometimes vote against their best interests. Removing the party name would force a deeper dive from the voter in investment of time and energy into really getting to know the candidate.
The candidate would likely support issues from the left, right, and center. The winner would legislate from all sides. Something might actually get accomplished.
