CLARK COUNTY, IN (WAVE) - Greater Clark County Schools discussed ditching the Valedictorian/Salutatorian title based on what some are calling unhealthy competition and a flawed system.

Several teachers, principals and staff presented at the Board of Education meeting Tuesday night to explain why this might be the direction Greater Clark should consider taking.

In some cases, students are picking courses not based on career interest, but because a course is weighted more and would contribute to their rank among classmates.

“I have students who want to be doctors who aren't taking anatomy because it's an honors and not an AP,” Jeffersonville High School Principal Julie Straight said. “Students are making choices based solely on ‘how do I get or keep the number one ranking?’ It has brought out flaws that bring out a very unhealthy competition with great kids and great parents who are doing the best they can.”

Teachers argued that the change is mainly a title. But for Melanie Brison, the title was crucial. She was the 2004 Valedictorian at New Washington.

“I actually got my scholarship based on valedictorian, it wasn't based on SAT, I’m not a good test taker,” Brison said. “So I was able to get that scholarship and which was the only way I could afford that university, because I couldn’t afford it otherwise, so it actually worked in my favor to have the title.”

The board will consider the policy change and is seeking feedback from students.
