While on patrol on the night of Sunday, September 13, 2015, Kentucky State Police Trooper Cameron Ponder attempted to stop a vehicle on Interstate 24 when the driver fled.
During the chase, the fleeing driver suddenly stopped his car without warning which caused Ponder's KSP cruiser to crash into the rear of the fleeing car.
After the crash, the fleeing driver fired several shots into Ponder's cruiser, striking him multiple times.
Ponder, 31, died shortly before midnight at a hospital in Princeton, Kentucky. He had been on the job only eight months.
The suspect fled on foot but was captured after the next morning after a manhunt.
