LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - What a difference one year makes. This time last year the University of Louisville football team was 0-3. Now they are 3-0, ranked third in the country, and have a Heisman candidate on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
And what a difference Title IX makes. When it was instituted nearly 45 years ago, less than 300,000 women played college sports in this country. Today, more than three million women play college sports and American women have won more medals than American men the past two summer Olympics.
We applaud the Louisville women's sports network and are proud to partner with them this week in honoring the talented high school and collegiate women athletes and teams. Our region is certainly a cut above in the excellence in women's sports with several high schools, and UofL, helping to make this happen.
The Cardinals may well win a national football championship this year - and they may also win a national basketball championship – from either the men or the women. Those possibilities are a tribute to many but athletic director Tom Jurich deserves the biggest salute for his leadership in making it possible.
