Pass the Cash: Couple loses young daughter to cancer

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Every Wednesday we Pass the Cash to someone in WAVE Country fighting to financially keep their head above water.

Situations change so quickly that the letter we selected this week was one we had gotten a couple of months ago - a letter about family fighting to save their baby girl.

As we Passed the Cash we learned the family was not only devastated by the loss of their daughter but still fighting to make their way back to a life not filled with pain and debt.

The struggle started months ago, a struggle Shelena Gaus and her husband shared with Pass the Cash on wave3.com

“It's a sad story and we miss her every day for sure,” Shelena said.

The story is heartbreaking. A couple welcomed a beautiful baby girl into their lives.

“She had saratoma cancer. They did surgery on her and she was going to Frazier Rehab. Pneumonia set in and she wasn't able to fight,” Shelena’s husband said.

She was only 17 months old.

“It just was really kind of rapid. They just couldn't get her into radiation and they weren't sure it would work.” Shelena said.

Bills kept coming in the middle of a crisis.

“They were with her at the hospital and never left her side, epitome of great parents for sure,” Shelena said.

Along with the mounting pressure and pain the bills too were adding up.

“He was sad. He couldn't tell me how he was but that's to be expected,” Shelena said.

We wanted to Pass the Cash as a blessing and not another burden. We did not want to add more stress to an already strained situation. It is not what the family needs but the cash they could use.

We started with a $300 gift from WAVE 3 News and then a message and $100 more from an anonymous donor. With a total of $400 and a million prayers for the parents who lost their little girl.

Dad came to the door and he was not ready. Not ready for cameras, not ready to talk. He's knees almost buckled under him and tears poured from his eyes. He needed to keep his pain private and close to his heart but he also needed a little bit of help. We tried to give him both by stepping back and stepping away.

Not all scars show, not all wounds heal, but when we can we must try to help soothe the pain someone feels.
