Pass the Cash: Single mother of 3 gets a little help for medical bills

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - You don't always know what someone else is going through, but if you do know and you can help that is such a blessing.

With our WAVE 3 News viewers leading the way we Pass the Cash each week with the hope of making a difference for someone who really needs a helping hand.

Elizabeth and Jay submitted a Pass the Cash nomination form on for a co-worker who works hard but is also having a hard time.

"Deidra is an amazing woman. She's a single mom. She has three kids. She's such a hard worker," Elizabeth said. "She's the type of person that would never ask for anything from anyone and so I know this money will be huge for her."

With a sick son, health battles of her own and a few other tough challenges she keeps to herself, Deidra's battle is silent but overwhelming for the single mom.

"She could just really use some help to make ends meet," Elizabeth said.

Deidra's ends aren't even close right now, so to help her we started with $300 from WAVE 3 News and another $100 from a friend of WAVE 3 News. Now all we needed was Deidra who had been sent on an errand to get her out of the office.

Deidra was in a rush to get back to the office. Panicked because she thought they were gone too long. She had no idea the errand she was sent out on was to keep her away until we were ready for her.
"You've been through so much over the last year," Elizabeth said.

Deidra was unsure but listening.

"You are such a strong proud woman. You've never asked for help from anybody and that's why the folks from WAVE 3 and Dawne Gee selected you for Pass the Cash," Elizabeth told her.

Deidra was shocked but grateful.

"Oh my gosh," she said. "I'm just speechless. I'm speechless, so kind and gracious."

There are days Deidra would like to just call it quits, it's just all too much.

"But I have children so I have to keep going," she said.

Deidra never stops working or caring for her kids.

"As a single parent you always want to do right by your children. You don't want to let them see the struggle so they'll grow up knowing you can get through anything you can," Deidra said.

And sometimes even when you are not expecting it you may get a little help.

"I'm speechless and I'm touch it's heartfelt," Deidra said. "Thank you so much."
