LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Officers in the Louisville Metro Police Department’s fifth division are warning of car thefts with a singular trend.

“We had five stolen cars within the fifth division and every one of them was stolen because the key was with the vehicle,” Lt. James Cirillo said.

Cirillo said at least one of these thefts involved a key hidden on the outside of the vehicle, with a hide-a-key device.

“Apparently somebody found it and took their vehicle,” Cirillo said.

The hide-a-keys aren’t hard to find at retail outlets. They can be purchased for just a couple of dollars at any Home Depot or Lowes.

It may make life easier for you. But police say it also makes life easier for thieves.

“If you put your key in or on the vehicle, it's very convenient for someone to find it,” Cirillo said.
