NEWTON COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A mother and her two children, killed in a hayride crash on Halloween night, have been identified by police.

The crash happened before 8 p.m. on Highway 80 in Chunky. Sgt. Andy West, with the Mississippi Highway Patrol, says a Jeep was towing a trailer with several adults and children on it, when a Ford F-150 rear-ended the trailer.

33-year-old Kristina Shaver, of Chunky, 8-year-old Baylie Shaver and 2-year-old Brooke Shaver were all killed.

According to a family friend, McKensey, the only surviving child from this family, is hospitalized but in fair condition. We're told that the husband and father to the victims died back in July.

Shaver's sister, Melissa Cook, was also involved in the crash and we're told she's now in good condition after being critical for several days.

All seven people remaining on the trailer were taken by helicopter to hospitals in Meridian and Jackson.

UMMC confirms that five patients are being treated in Jackson. Here is an update on their conditions:

  • 32-year-old Melissa Cook - Good
  • 3-year-old Brycen Cook - Good
  • 7-year-old McKensey Shaver - Serious
  • 9-year-old Kaitlyn Cook - Serious
  • 7-year-old Chloe Cook - Serious

The driver of the Jeep that was pulling the trailer, 58-year-old Terry Smith, was not injured. The driver of the Ford F-150 that ran into the back of the trailer was also unharmed.

He has been identified as 20-year-old Chase Cook from Decatur.

A vigil for those killed will be held on Wednesday at 6:45 p.m. We are working to gather more details on when and where it will take place.
