PRIDE, LA (WAFB) -

An East Baton Rouge Parish teacher was let go after a video surfaced showing her apparently striking a student while at school, according to a statement from the parish school system.

Shaky cell phone video recorded by another student captured the tense moment inside the Northeast High School classroom, where the teacher appears to repeatedly hit the seventh grader with an electric cord.

"The whole situation could have been handled in a different way," said Sundari Wallace, the mother of the girl in the video. "She would still have her job."

Wallace said her 12-year-old daughter and another student got in an argument just moments before the scene that played out in the clip.

"Another student told my daughter to watch out. By the time my daughter got up out of the desk to run, she slipped and fell, and that's when the teacher started hitting her," Wallace explained.

The girl showed the video to her mom on Thursday. She also pulled her pants down, revealing what Wallace described as "bruises" on the girl’s legs.

"That's when my adrenaline actually started rushing," Wallace added.

Wallace took the video to school leaders on Monday morning. The teacher was initially put on paid administrative leave in accordance with "district policy and procedures," according to a statement from the school system.

That same statement, which was released Tuesday, indicated that the teacher is now no longer employed by the East Baton Rouge Parish School System.

"You can't just take matters in your own hand and discipline a child with actions such as whooping them. It's not acceptable in a home and I know it's not acceptable in a school," Wallace said.

The school system brought in the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office to investigate what happened in the classroom. They also advised the Department of Children and Family Services about the incident.
