JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

The Arkansas Parent Teacher Association received grant money to educate parents on legislation affecting students and provide "an equal playing field for every child."

Arkansas PTA is one of six PTA organizations across the country to receive this grant.

The Gates Foundation awarded it $15,000 to educate parents, students, and community leaders on College and Career Readiness.

Valley View PTA President Michelle Cadle said College and Career Readiness is an initiative stemming from the Every Student Succeeds Act.

“Parents are the number one advocate for their children,” Cadle said. “So that's what we want them to do is take a primary role in their child's education.”

Cadle also serves on the state PTA board and said training sessions will begin in 2017 and focus on standards, assessments, data privacy, and advocacy.

“Educate parents as well as the general public on fact from fiction on what college and career readiness is,” Cadle said.

The Valley View PTA and the state organization hope by holding training sessions parents will fully understand what the state has in mind for their children's education and help students to reach their full potential.

“The common core was a taboo thing, so what a lot of people fail to realize is in these standards the local school district makes the decision on what the curriculum will be through each district,” Cadle said. “So even though you have a set of standards for the state as well as the nation, it’s kind of just an opportunity to have an equal playing field for every child.”

For more information on sessions or to schedule one in your area email office@arkansaspta.org or call Cadle at 870-253-2617.

Georgia, West Virginia, Michigan, New Jersey, and Wisconsin were also awarded a grant.
