MESA, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

A pedestrian hit and killed by a pickup truck was dragged for several blocks before the driver stopped to drop off a passenger and saw the body, Phoenix police said.

Officers say 24-year-old Karlson Hanks was crossing the street at 51st Avenue and Osborn Road Saturday just before 2 a.m. when the pickup hit him.

"After the collision, the driver failed to stop and fled the collision scene," Phoenix Police Sgt. Mercedes Fortune said.

The driver, 35-year-old Elvin Mejia, kept traveling to 54th Avenue before stopping, officers said.

"Officers located the vehicle in the area of 5400 W. Osborn and realized that the victim was lodged underneath," Fortune said.

Officers say Mejia told them he knew he hit someone but kept going.

Mejia was arrested and booked into jail on charges of leaving the scene of a collision resulting in death/injury, a misdemeanor warrant and driving with a suspended license.

Impairment was not a factor.
