(CNN) - It may not feel like spring in some parts of the country, but the season of new life is officially upon us.

Monday marked the first official day of spring.

Specifically, spring began at 6:29 a.m. Eastern. That is the exact moment of the vernal equinox when the sun's rays were directly over the Equator.

The equinox means there are equal amounts of light and darkness during the day.

The days will start to have more daylight over the next few months, culminating the summer solstice June 20.
