LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Visitors to the Derby this week will notice plenty of changes from a year ago and pick up more than a few emotional vibes.

Indiana fans are celebrating the best basketball recruiting class in the Big 10, led by hometown favorite Romeo Langford of New Albany.

Kentucky fans are celebrating what they believe is the best recruiting class in the country and expect a national championship ahead.

Louisville fans are embracing a new president, athletic director and basketball coach, while reeling from several lawsuits associated with the school. They are warily eyeing an opening football game with Alabama without their top two players from last year, both NFL first round draft picks.

The Louisville community is frustrated by the state education board preparing to vote for a takeover of Jefferson County Public Schools following a recommendation to do so by their new interim Education Commissioner.

Visitors will see a magnificent new entrance to Churchill Downs and a group of new suites, as well as a larger football stadium across the street, a beautiful new Omni Hotel added to the skyline of the city, in addition to a nearly completed renovation and expansion of the International Convention Center.

Nightlife will be even more enticing, with new galas, bars, restaurants and distilleries.

They will also be able to follow all the action on WAVE 3 News on multiple platforms and we invite you to as well – from our Dawn at the Downs special coverage to the Republic Bank Pegasus Parade, Oaks, Galas and Inside the Rail specials and exclusive Derby coverage.

Welcome our visitors and show them we are as hospitable a people as they will ever meet.
